Sports / Chelsea Planning To Sack Conte Over Costa Text Message by Kingvictor: Last week on Sun at 08:14am

Antonio Conte’s future at Chelsea has become an uncertain, after it emerged that the club is not happy with their manager, over the text message he sent to Diego Costa .
No firm decision has yet been made, but Sportsmail reports senior figures at Stamford Bridge are angry with Conte telling their first-choice striker by text message that he is not wanted.
They have reportedly discussed the astonishing possibility of sacking the Italian.
If that happens, it would be a shocking decision by the Stamford Bridge outfit, although owner Roman Abramovich fired Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti after successful spells at the club. Even Chelsea’s only Champions League win was not enough to keep Roberto Di Matteo in the job.
The club sees Conte’s handling of Costa and his apparent unhappiness with the club hierarchy over transfers this summer
Abramovich has made it clear in the past, particularly in the case of Mourinho, that no manager is bigger than the club.

Education / Jamb Announces Candidates Eligible For Supplementary Utme by johneewalker: Last week on Fri at 09:45am
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Thursday said it had concluded arrangements for its supplementary 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Fabian Benjamin, the board’s head, media and information, said this in an interview with NAN.

According to him, the examination, scheduled for July 1, is to give candidates with issues of late registration and others opportunity to write the Computer-Based Test.

NAN reports that results of the examination which earlier took place from May 13 to May 20 have since been released.

JAMB on Wednesday announced the cancellation of results of no fewer than 50,000 candidates over examination malpractice and other alleged infractions.

Benjamin urged candidates for the supplementary examination not to panic, but remain focused and confident.

“The board is using the opportunity to charge affected candidates for the rescheduled examination not to panic, as text messages will be sent to their telephones, with which they used in registering for the examination, to the effect of their qualification.

“There is really nothing to be afraid of or worried about. To this effect therefore, they should be expecting such notification before 12 midnight of Thursday, June 15.

“Messages will also be sent to their e-mail addresses. Their profile will also contain the information as it had been updated.

“In the same vein, all candidates whose results had been cancelled outrightly following their involvement in examination irregularities will also be notified through their e-mails, text messages as well as their profiles.

“This set of candidates is not eligible for the supplementary examination,” Benjamin said.

According to Benjamin, candidates for the rescheduled examination will also be notified on the date and venue on or before Monday, June 19.

He said that candidates could check their result status to avoid being extorted by fraudsters who might want to seize the opportunity to exploit them.

Benjamin noted that the examination body was taking extra steps to contact all rescheduled candidates for the examination to prevent them from falling prey to fraudulent persons.

“Sequel to this therefore, the board is calling on members of the public, especially candidates, to avail themselves of the open door and inclusive policy of the board to seek clarification where the need arises, from any of our offices nationwide.

“This rescheduled examination became necessary to ensure that no innocent candidate is unjustly punished,” Benjamin said.

Sports / Marital Issues Affected Me At Leicester — Musa by johneewalker: Last week on Fri at 08:39am

Super Eagles and Leicester City forward Ahmed Musa says he is looking forward to a better season in England than the one he had last season after marrying his new wife Juliet Adeh last month.

Musa struggled for form and consistency following his big money move from CSKA Moscow to the former Premier League Champions, and at a point failed to make the matchday squad in some of their games.

The 24 year old puts it’s down to issues in his marriage, and after divorcing his wife of four years and mother of his two kids Jamila, Musa told Complete Sports that he is once again happy following his marriage to Juliet.

“Marriage is not new to me but I believe it was a right move to make when I did. The past remains in the past.

I’m happy now and I think well and I can focus on my game which suffered a bit.” Musa said.

Linked with a move away from the King Power stadium, the speedy winger who is also comfortable as a forward insist he has a future at the club, hence he is not willing to consider a move away.

Nigerian Ahmed Musa and his Leicester City teammate Jamie Vardy have emerged as Fenerbahce’s primary transfer targets, according to DHA.

Fenerbahce are looking to boost their attacking ranks, with Dutchman Robin van Persie set to leave the club in the European summer and West Africans strikers Emmanuel Emenike and Moussa Sow also expected to depart.

DHA claims that the Turkish club will make an offer for the Foxes pair soon and hope that the promise of European is enough to attract them to Istanbul.

Musa, 24, signed for Leicester last season but struggled to make a major impact at the King Power Stadium. The Nigerian scored four goals in 29 appearances across all competitions.

Politics / Inflation Drops 16.25% In May –nbs by johneewalker: Last week on Fri at 08:37am
The Federal Government’s claim that Nigeria’s economy may exit recession this year is gradually gaining traction as latest report from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Thursday show that inflation dropped to 16.25 per cent in May from 17.24 per cent a month ago.

This shows that prices of items in the basket of goods selected for compilling the Consumer Price Index for the month made about 1.25 points recovery away from the 15 per cent target of the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP).

According to the NBS report, inflation dropped from 17.24 per cent in April to 16.25 per cent in May with the highest increases recorded in food, solid and liquid fuels, clothing, fish and wines.

“The Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures inflation increased by 16.25 per cent (year-on-year) in May 2017. This was 0.99 per cent points lower than the rate recorded in April (17.24 per cent). This represents the fourth consecutive decline in the rate of inflation since January 2017,” the report said.

“On a month-on-month basis, the headline index increased by 1.88 per cent in May 2017, 0.28 per cent points higher than the rate of 1.60 per cent recorded in April 2017 indicating the existence of persistent pressure on prices despite the general decline in year-on-year inflation. Month-on-month inflation cumulatively rose by 7.7 per cent since January 2017.

“The food index increased by 19.27 per cent (year-on-year) in May 2017, down by 0.03 per cent points from the rate recorded in April (19.30 per cent) indicating continued pressure on food prices.

“Price movements recorded by All Items less farm produce or core sub-index rose by 13 per cent (year-on-year) in May, down by 1.80 per cent points from rate recorded in April (14.80 per cent). This represents the 7th straight month of decline in the core index since November 2016.”

President Muhammadu Buhari had unveiled the ERGP as part of measures to reduce the inflation rate to about 15 per cent before the end of 2017.

Meanwhile, Nigeria returned to its premier spot as Africa’s number one crude exporter as its oil exports are set to reach 1.84 million barrels per day (bpd) in July. The new figure is slightly higher because of a re-streaming of Forcados export terminal, according to the nation’s loading programmes.

Forcados exports resumed at the end of May after a near complete shutdown since February 2016 as the grade’s operator, Shell’s local subsidiary, SPDC, issued an initial June schedule of 197,000 bpd.

It, however, increased the schedule to 252,000bpd. By this resumption, Nigeria returns to the status of Africa’s largest oil exporter, a title it lost to Angola in 2016. The loss followed militant attacks on the nation’s oil infrastructure in the oil-rich Niger Delta region.

Production has since improved, following peaceful negotiations with leaders from the region. Angola’s July exports are expected to be 1.55 million bpd.

With a force majeure in place on Bonny Light and loading delays of as much as 10 days, Nigeria’s export plans for June and July are likely to change.

Politics / Militants Give Northerners Ultimatum To Leave Niger Delta by johneewalker: Last week on Fri at 08:30am
A Coalition of Niger Delta Agitators (CNDA) has ordered northerners residing in the region to leave before October 1, 2017, or face the consequences.

This latest threat came few days after the coalition handed down an ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding return of oil blocks owned by the northerners to the region.

The coalition is made up of nine groups, including Niger Delta Warriors, Niger Delta Volunteers (NDV), Niger Delta Watchdogs (NDW), Niger Delta Peoples Fighters (NDPF), Bakassi Freedom Fighters (BFF), Niger Delta Movement for Justice (NDMJ), Niger Delta Fighters Network (NDFN), Niger Delta Freedom Mandate (NDFM) and Niger Delta Development Network (NDDN).

Spokespersons of the groups, including General John Duku (NDW) and convener, CNDA, General Ekpo Ekpo (NDV), General Osarolor Nedam (NDW), Major General Henry Okon Etete (NDPF), Major General Asukwo Henshaw (BFF), Major General Ibinabo Horsfall (NDMJ), Major General Duke Emmanson (NDFN), Major General Inibeghe Adams (Niger NDFM) and Major General Ibinabo Tariah (NDDN), in a statement yesterday alleged that security agencies of being privy to the quit notice to the South Easterners by Arewa youths.

Also, the agitators accused security agencies of complacency, and added that they are prepared to declare Sovereign Republic of Niger Delta on October 1.

“As follow up to our previous press release, a joint meeting between CNDA and youth leaders across the Niger Delta region held in Port Harcourt, yesterday, to review the state of Nigeria, the position of Niger Delta in the Nigerian state, after hours of deliberation; we hereby resolved as follows:

“All northerners living in Niger Delta has been given three months notice to quit the Niger Delta before October 1, 2017.

We still stand by our previous decisions, and we demand immediate return of oil blocks owned by northerners back to the Niger Delta people.

All oil and gas companies operating in oil block(s)/well(s) illegally owned by northerners should also vacate such oil blocks/wells/plat-forms before October 1, 2017.

“We demand immediate relocation of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) headquarters to Niger Delta and replacement of the Group Managing Director with an indigene of Niger Delta region.

“All offices/boards/agencies that have anything to do with oil and gas should be relocated immediately to Niger Delta region and all non-Niger Delta directors/staff replaced with Niger Delta indigenes.

“We are not surprised by the actions of the Inspector General of Police, Department of State Service and even the army, as they were all consulted and aware of the threat by northern youths before it was issued, that is why they are incapable of making any arrest.

“We are prepared to declare the Sovereign Republic of Niger Delta on October 1, 2017, the day of freedom is near. We, therefore, call on our compatriots to remain focused, united and steadfast as the battle is going to be brief, but fierce.

“The liberation of our people and motherland is our target. We shall liberate our people from the slavery of Nigeria and the northern parasites; we shall bring to our people a nation that shall guarantee equal opportunity, justice and shall respect the rule of law and uphold the sanctity of human life.

“We want to sound this as a warning to all northerners living in Niger Delta, to quit our land before October 1, 2017, as this is not just a threat; after October 1, 2017, any northerner found within the Republic Niger Delta shall be seen as an intruder and shall be treated as such.

“We also use this opportunity to advise oil and gas companies in our territory to shut down further operations; Petroleum and Natural Gas Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) to warn/withdraw their members from Niger Delta before October 1, 2017, or risk their lives. Our next action will surprise you.

“We condemn in totality the meeting held by the acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, with some northern elders and youths. We see it as a grand conspiracy, any responsible government should have arrested those traitors but, rather turn round to meet with them and pleads for peace.

“Does the Federal Government see people from other zones as second class citizens? Why are they more important to the acting president? Why is it that Nigerian law is always weak when it involves the northerners? We are still watching the unfolding events with keen interest.

“If Nigeria should still remain one, which we doubt, the Federal Government should immediately restructure the country. We demand 100 percent control of our resources, adequate infrastructure development, equal opportunity for all irrespective of ethnic background or political affiliation; adequate circulation of appointment across the geopolitical zones.”

Sports / Manchester United Close In On Morata Deal by johneewalker: Last week on Fri at 08:21am

Jose Mourinho still sees Alvaro Morata as the man to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic as Manchester United intensify their pursuit of the Real Madrid forward, despite an £80m price tag.

The player is understood to be keen on a Premier League move and if United CEO Ed Woodward can negotiate a transfer fee with Real, our colleagues at Sky in Italy understand personal terms will not be a sticking point.

Reports in Spain say Morata’s agent Juanma Lopez held talks at the Bernabeu on Wednesday to try to negotiate the player’s departure.

Standing in the way is Real’s £80m demand for the player who scored 19 goals in 43 appearances last season.

His coach Zinedine Zidane wants the former Juventus striker to stay but the player is desperate for more game time, which the Frenchman can’t guarantee.

United have been in talks with the La Liga champions over Morata for several weeks and Sky in Italy reported on June 9 they had seen a £52.4m offer rejected with Madrid understood to be holding out for close to £78m.

Morata’s representative Juanma Lopez also revealed earlier this month that Real had rejected an offer from AC Milan.

Jobs/Vacancies / Why We Sacked Workers – Mtn, Airtel by johneewalker: Last week on Thu at 09:06am

MTN and Airtel Nigeria have explained why the sacked workers in the recent restructuring of the organisations.

The two companies told the House Committee on Telecommunications, chaired by Rep Saheed Fijabi (APC, Oyo), yesterday that some of the staff were disengaged due to inability to fit into the new technological developments.

Responding, the acting Human Resource Executive of MTN, Ajibola Opeoluwa-Calebs, said the reports that all the staff that left the company in the last one year were sacked were not true.

He said out of the 368 staff that left the company in the last one year, 194 left on their own volition, while the rest were disengaged due to various reasons, including inability to effectively fit into the company’s new technological development.

He also told the lawmakers that as a result of the disengagement, additional vacancies were created and that the firm would soon employ 240 staff to replace them, saying the first phase of the employment would see 150 positions filled.

“We had a special arrangement with some of our employees, in April, who had been with us for some time and wanted to go and use their skills elsewhere. A total of 194 people left voluntarily, while 65 people were disengaged with the discretion of the management. Others were disengaged before April,” he said.

Not satisfied with the position that 194 staff voluntarily left MTN, the committee demanded the list of all the staff.

Also speaking, Airtel’s director of human resources, Gbemiga Owolabi, said a total of 90 staff left the company in the last one year, out of which 66 resigned, six “were exited because they were involved in some issues,” while 14 were disengaged.

Crime / Notorious Kidnapper Names Victims by johneewalker: Last week on Wed at 10:39am

The notorious kidnapper arrested at the weekend, along with six members of his gang in Lagos, by police operatives from the intelligence teams has named some of his victims.

Chukwudidumeme Onuamadike, alias Evans, told detectives that though he could not remember the number of people he kidnapped or the amount of money he collected as ransom, he was, however, able to mention a few.

In Edo and Lagos states, he remembered kidnapping Mr. Mbarikatta William Uboma at Festac Town on June 16, 2012, where the sum of N20 million was collected as ransom before he was released.

A police classified document containing Evan’s confessional statement revealed that Mr. Paul Cole from Ohafia in Abia State was also kidnapped by the gang on August 23, 2012, at Festac Town where N20m was also paid.

Mr. Mohammed Jamal, a Lebanese, who was kidnapped on August 19, 2012, at Ajah, paid N17m at Ojo area of Lagos to regain his freedom.

Evan’s gang also kidnapped Mr. Kingsley Nwokenta on September 19, 2012, after he left Lebanon Bar in Festac Town and he had to pay N15m in addition to his black Toyota Venza car that he forfeited to the gang before he regained his freedom; just as the gang also claimed responsibility for the kidnap of Mr. Anthony Ozoanidobi on October 10, 2012, along Marwa Road in Satellite Town where N15m was paid before he was taken to Apple junction, Amuwo-Odofin in Lagos and released.

Evans further stated that his gang also kidnapped Mr. Leo Abraham in Lagos on August 20, 2012, and dumped him at Badagry Road in Lagos after he paid N15m.

However, Ojukwu Cosmas, who sells Toyota parts at Aspanda Trade Fair, who was kidnapped on January 21, 2016, at Festac Town was not too lucky as he had to pay $1m to secure his release.

James Uduji who was kidnapped by the gang at Seventh Avenue, Festac Town late last year paid $1.2m after being held for six weeks before he was released, while Chief Raymond Okoye Odu-Na–Ichida who was kidnapped in 2015 also paid $1m to regain his freedom after two months in captivity.

Uche Okoroafor, a trader at Alaba International Market, Lagos, was kidnapped by the gang in 2015 and held captive for three months before he was released after paying $1m, just as Elias Ukachukwu, who was kidnapped by the gang in November, 2015 also paid $1m for his release.

Francis Umeh, a spare parts dealer at Aspanda, was kidnapped in July 2016, at Raji Rasaki Estate and released after paying $1m to secure his release.

The gang, however, recorded a fatal loss when in 2013, in its attempt to kidnap Chief Vincent Obianudo, the owner of Young Shall Grow Motors, met with stiff resistance from the policemen attached to the chief. The police opened fire and killed two members of the gang. Though the gang also killed a policeman and some of its members escaped, Chief Obianudo, who sustained bullet wounds during the attack, survived after several surgeries.

The last known victim of the gang in Lagos before it was smashed is Mr. Donatus Dunu, a pharmacist and importer of drugs, who was kidnapped on February 14, 2017, in Elupeju area of Lagos. The sum of N150m was paid by the victim’s family to secure his release, but Evans collected the money and refused to release the victim, insisting that an additional N300m must be paid.

The gang regretted that Dunu escaped from Evans’ detention camp in Igando on May 12, 2017, without paying the additional ransom.

In Edo State, the gang kidnapped Mr. Ohunyon Ernest in November 2011 and he had to pay N85m, just as Mr. Dan Odiete who was also kidnapped by the gang in Benin City in 2013, paid N100m to regain his freedom.

The owner of Uyi Technical who was kidnapped by Evan’s gang in Benin City in 2013 paid N100m before he was released, while Tom, kidnapped in Benin in 2012, paid N100m to the gang.

The owner of Kings Paint was also kidnapped in Benin City in 2010 by the same gang and had to pay N40m to regain his freedom even as Mr. Randeki, who was kidnapped by the gang in 2010 paid N30m for his release.

Evans, who was nabbed by a combined team of police officers and men from the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and the Technical Intelligence Unit (TIU) at his private residence in Magodo, Lagos, on June 10, was described by the police as a very intelligent suspect.

Other members of the gang that were also arrested at different locations include Felix Chinemerem, 36, from Arochukwu in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, and Nwosu Chikodi Chukwuma, aka Sudo, 42, and is said to have over 20 years experience in armed robbery and about eight years experience in kidnapping.

Other arrested members of the gang are Uchechukwu Amadi from Anambra State who the police described as the head of Evans’ detention camp, a female, Ogechi Amadi, said to be the woman that rented the house and cooks for the kidnappers and their victims in the camp.

The rest are Suoyo Paul, aka Nwana, 42, a native of Bayelsa State, and is said to be the one supplying the gang with rifles and ammunition, while Ikenna Emeka, 28, from Anambra State, said he participated in four kidnappings in Festac Town with Evans before Evans sacked him from the gang for stealing an expensive wrist watch and a ring from a victim without informing him.

Politics / Flood Washes Off Bridge Linking South-west To North by johneewalker: Last week on Wed at 10:29am

Flood occasioned by a downpour has washed off a bridge in Tatabu and Gidan Moin communities linking the North-west around Jebba/Mokwa/Kontagora axis with the South-west.

The road is one of the many federal highways linking Niger State to other parts of the country.

Our correspondent learnt that three trucks and a Mazda van were washed away by the flood.

Natives said the bridge which was in deplorable condition gave way at 9pm Sunday as a result of high water current during a heavy rain which lasted up to Monday. The situation resulted in a long traffic of vehicles coming from the South-west and North-west.

“Motorists and passengers were trapped on both sides for two days running,” a native, Abdulrahaman Sadiq, told our correspondent on phone yesterday.

He said smaller vehicles now diverted through Pategi to Enagi where they were ferried across River Niger.

Daily Trust learnt that the commissioners of works and transport, Malam Abdulmalik Cheche and his information counterpart, Mr. Jonathan Vatsa were on assessment visit to the area as at the time of filing this report.

Vatsa told our reporter on phone that the situation was a national emergency, and appealed to the Federal Government to immediately moblise for the reconstruction of the bridge, while also calling for the renovation of all federal roads across the state which he said had become a death trap.

Crime / Police Arrest 124 Rapists, Sodomites In Kano by johneewalker: Last week on Wed at 10:11am

A total of 124 suspected rapists and sodomites have been arrested by the police within three months in Kano state.

Parading the suspects before newsmen, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Magaji Musa Majia said the police had recorded 115 cases of rape, sodomy and other acts of gross indecency in the state between April and June, 2017.

DSP Majia explained that 128 victims were involved in the crimes out of which 124 suspects had been arrested, 94 cases charged to courts, while 13 cases were under investigation.

The police spokesperson expressed sadness over the increasing rate of such crimes across the state, assuring that the police would continue to do their best to curtail the situation.

He said, “The state Commissioner of Police, Rabi’u Yusuf has promised that police will use professionalism and diligence in investigating any case bordering on rape and sodomy. Anybody that is found guilty in such crimes will be prosecuted in the court of law.”

He, therefore, urged the general public, especially parents and guardians, to be cautious and guide their children against the ugly trend.

He also appealed to religious leaders, traditional rulers and other well meaning members of the society to join hands in fighting the social vices.

Events / Many Trapped, ‘number Of Fatalities’ As Massive Fire Engulfs London Tower Block by johneewalker: Last week on Wed at 09:59am
A massive fire which engulfed a tower block in London in the early hours of Wednesday has resulted in fatalities and left fifty people hospitalised.

London fire commissioner, Dany Cotton, confirmed that there were a “number of fatalities” as a result of the inferno.

“I am very sad to confirm that there have been a number of fatalities. I cannot confirm the number at this time due to the size and complexity of this building. It would clearly be wrong for me to speculate further. Equally the cause of this fire is not known at this stage,” she said in a statement.

Hundreds of people reside in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower in north Kensington.

Several persons are reportedly unaccounted for while some are trapped in their homes as the fire rages on.

Evacuation is currently ongoing in the tower, according to the London Metropolitan police.

About forty fire engines and over 200 firefighters were deployed to the scene of the incident.

Dan Daly, London Fire Brigade assistant commissioner, was quoted by the BBC as saying that firefighters are “working extremely hard in very difficult conditions to tackle this fire”.

“This is a large and very serious incident and we have deployed numerous resources and specialist appliances.”

The tower block which contains 120 flats is said to have undergone a two-year, £10m refurbishment that was completed last year.

A resident group reportedly issued series of warnings of the tower being a fire risk.
