Crime / Global Hunt For Nigerian Cyber Criminal Spreading Malware by johneewalker: Last week on Wed at 08:38am

A Nigerian working alone around Abuja has stirred a global hunt as he orchestrated numerous malware infection campaigns targeting more than 4,000 organisations globally over the past four months, a cyber security company claimed.

www.Securityweek.com quoting Check Point security researchers said the attacks targeted various companies in industries such as oil & gas, manufacturing, banking, and construction, in an attempt to steal data and commit fraud.

Many of the companies are leading international names and some have had their defenses breached by the attacks, the security researchers reveal.

According to Check Point, at least a dozen companies confirmed they have been infected during the campaign, including a marine and energy solutions company in Croatia, a transportation company in Abu Dhabi, a mining company in Egypt, a construction company in Dubai, an oil & gas firm in Kuwait, and a construction organization in Germany.

Despite the large scale campaign, behind it is not an expert gang of cybercriminals or a nation state actor, but “a relatively unskilled man in his mid-20s, operating from a location near the capital of Nigeria,” Check Point discovered.

Working on his own, the Nigerian uses fraudulent emails seemingly coming from oil and gas giant Saudi Aramco, the world’s second largest daily oil producer. The phishing messages target financial departments within companies in an attempt to trick employees into revealing company bank details or into opening a malware-infected attachment.

The malware used in these attacks includes NetWire, a remote access Trojan that provides its operator with full control over infected machines, and Hawkeye, a software for logging key strokes (malware already associated with Nigerian cybercriminals). The attacks eventually resulted in a total of 14 successful infections. The cybercriminal ended up earning thousands of dollars in the process, the researchers said.

Despite showing a low level of cyber-skills, using crude and unsophisticated fraudulent emails, with almost no research or social engineering involved in creating them, the attacker was successful in his attempts.

The attacker used generic email titles, phrased as “Dear Sir/Ms,” sent the same email to numerous targets, “all in blind carbon copy, urging victims to send back banking details, perhaps for future scams.” He sent the emails from email addresses sale.cement_till_tw@yahoo.com, and cciticarinternational@yahoo.com.

The fraudster used old, generic and readily available online malware, as well as freeware to ‘scrape’ email addresses from corporate websites and used them as targets for his campaigns.

“The fact that the campaign was still effective, despite using only basic cyber-criminal techniques, highlights just how much of a problem these business email compromise (BEC) attacks have become,” Check Point said.

Since uncovering the campaign and establishing its origins, Check Point’s research team has notified law enforcement authorities in Nigeria and internationally and shared its findings with them.

Checkpoint said the Nigerian in his 20s operates social media accounts, where you he uses the motto: ‘get rich or die trying’.

His attack campaign uses fraudulent emails which appear to originate from oil and gas giant Saudi Aramco, the world’s second largest daily oil producer, targeting financial staff within companies to trick them into revealing company bank details, or open the email’s malware-infected attachment.

Last year, the FBI revealed that losses caused by BEC scams exceeded $3.1 billion. Victims are estimated to lose between $25,000 and $75,000 on average, per attack. However, it’s not only financial losses that victims should be concerned about, but also the fact that “the malware used by the criminal to infect organizations gives remote control over infected machines, and can perform keylogging functions. This enables harvesting of a variety of information from infected machines, such as details on the companies’ operations, assets and intellectual property.” Such details could be worth much more than the thousands of dollars obtained by fraud, Check Point says.

Another alarming aspect was that some of the targets are energy and infrastructure companies, which the unsophisticated cybercriminal was able to easily breach. Not only was the attacker able to compromise the networks of several large organizations, but he also managed to distribute his malware globally and remain under the radar for a long while.

“This highlights the need for all organizations to improve their security to protect against phishing and business email compromise scams, and to educate their employees to be cautious about opening emails, even from companies or individuals that they recognize,” Check Point said.

Literature / A dangerous Glance (short Story) by thankgod: Last week on Wed at 08:18am
[]Dele saw her smile at him across the room. He should have looked away but he didn’t. In a split second, he recognised that she was pretty in a homely way, had a beautiful figure and wore her braids elegantly.
He didn’t know her name but became pleasurably aware of her. However he wasn’t going to do anything about it because he was happily married, content and loved his wife dearly. He had been married for ten years and had never slept with another woman since then.
He left the restaurant and went back to work. As he lay beside his wife later that night, thoughts of her attacked and penetrated his peace. That smile, those braids, the pretty face, the slim figure! He indulged himself and let the thoughts roll. He slept off much later with a happy smile on his face.
Two weeks later, he sat at an empty table at the same restaurant enjoying his lunch. A shadow fell across his meal. “Do you mind if I join you?” she asked in a most sonorous voice. He couldn’t say no. He reveled in their short chat and wished he could prolong the lunch hour.
A month later, they had dinner together. If she had been a hunter, clingy, or demanding in any way, he would have found it easy to resist the attraction. But she was nice, selfless, submissive and pleasant and he often wondered if she was innocent.
During the next 3 months he spent all of his free time with her. It was just like a dream. He loved his wife but he enjoyed her company. An expensive indulgence; but he allowed himself to enjoy it.
Then one day she confronted him. He was responsible for her pregnancy. It was a mistake. She wanted an abortion. Could he please give her some money so she could do it at a professional hospital? He remembered he had always preached that - abortion is a sin against God. What was he going to do??
At that moment, his thoughts were with his wife. He loved her deeply and didn’t want anything to come between them, ever! How would she feel?
The joyful memories of the past 3 months instantly faded away. He held his head in his hands.
He remembered his mother's favourite proverb - ";Don't smell what you know you shouldn't eat."
How he wished that three months ago, he had looked away.

Sports / Gianluigi Buffon, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo Up For Uefa Award by johneewalker: Last week on Tue at 04:31pm

Gianluigi Buffon, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the three shortlisted players for the UEFA Player of the Year award.

The award, which was created in 2011, will be presented at the Champions League group stage draw on Aug. 24, with Real Madrid star Ronaldo the favourite to win it for the third time in four years after his outstanding performances helped Los Blancos to become the first club to retain the trophy.

Ronaldo scored five goals in the quarterfinal victory over Bayern Munich, with a hat trick in the second leg at the Bernabeu. He scored another treble in the first leg of the semi against Atletico Madrid, and two goals in the final success over Juventus.

Messi scored 54 goals for his club but Barcelona only had the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa del Rey to show for their efforts.

Buffon would be a popular choice, but the 39-year-old would have been better positioned had Juventus beaten Madrid in the Champions League final. Juventus did complete the Italian Double.

Literature / How A Plate Of Vegetable Soup Scattered Her Relationship (short Story) by thankgod: Last week on Tue at 11:21am
There was this hot looking guy I had eyes for in my area. He buys recharge card from my mom every evening, on his way back from work. He came to patronize as usual, and I was so happy when he started talking to me. He asked if that was my mom's shop and all that. Initially, I pretended I wasn't really into him, but later, I had to let my guard down.
So, he asked if I would accompany him to a friend's wedding, trust me I did not hesitate to say yes. On this fateful day, he came to pick me at home. We headed out to his friend's place to pick him, so we would all go to the reception from there.
While he drove, he gisted me about his crazy colleagues who collect phone numbers from random girls in the banking hall, and they end up not calling them because of their busy work schedules and all that. He told me of how this particular girl came to the bank to harass his colleague for standing her up on their first date. Suddenly, from no where, my stomach started rumbling. I thought it wasn't serious until gas built up in my system. I had to adjust my bumbum, a bit to a side, and prayed that the fart would not make noise, neither should it smell. The fart cooperated , it came gently, and the moving wind quickly nullified the smell.
Seconds later, my stomach rumbled again, and I felt like visiting the toilet. Beads of sweat already formed on my forehead, as I was really feeling pressed. I was no longer enjoying the conversation. My laughter was quickly replaced by a plastic smile. He noticed and asked if I was fine. I told him all was all good. I asked if we were close to his friend's house. Luckily for me, we got there five minutes later.
By that time, the poo was already at the tip of my anus. Immediately we got to his friend's place, I asked if i could use the toilet. His friend asked if i wanted to pee or poo. I told him I wanted to pee and he showed me the rest room. I entered and released all the stored poo. After this, I felt comfortable. Then, I flushed the toilet, but my poo decided not to go down. That was the day I knew poop can defy gravity. The more I try to flush, the more the poo rose up. At a point, the poo from the WC begin to spill. I was like 'kuku kill me now'.
Emmy came to knock and asked if I was fine. I was ashamed and dumbfounded. There was no rag or any piece of clothing in sight in the toilet to clean up the mess. And by that time, the poo had really spilled all over. I opened the toilet door, as Emmy won't stop knocking. His friend came around when he noticed the incessant knocking from him. I wished the ground opened up. His friend saw this and did not take it lightly.
"But girl, I asked you if you wanted to pee or poo, and you said you wanted to pee," he said. "The toilet is not good for poop. The plumber is coming to fix it tomorrow. We have been using our neighbor's flat since last week."
I was too ashamed to talk. See fine girl with all the fine dress and perfect make up embarrassed like this. Emmy and his friend got to work, see them packing my poo. We had to cancel going for the wedding reception. He drove me to my parents house in silence.
Not only did we not get to be in a relationship, but my mom also suffered for my incident, as he stopped buying recharge cards from her. It wasn't his fault, I blame the evil vegetable soup I ate the previous night.

Literature / Shades Of Romances Episode 32 (final) by thankgod: Last week on Tue at 11:18am
“you guys should quickly hide under the
pews” Joe said quietly, pulled out his
pistol, cocked and held it at ready. “don’t tell me you plan shooting inside a
chapel?” Jenifer asked, annoying me
with the question. “for goodness sake, keep quiet. This
man is trying his best to save our lives.
Do you think what he’s doing is easy?” i
quickly cautioned and silenced her. But
luckily the thugs moved away after
taking a look at the church. We all heaved a sigh of relief. “thank God they are gone” Tony
breathed. “we wait here till dawn, then I’ll go get
help” Joe added softly. “thank you bro. I owe you a lot” i said to
him with all my heart. “now it’s time we fully settle our quarrels
and make peace with each other. God
gave us a second chance to live, and
there won’t be a problem giving each
other a second chance by forgiving and
forgetting our past mistakes and fights. We are in the house of God. A very
good place to settle everything” Jenifer
suddenly said, while i scoffed. “not again ” i breathed. She ignored my comment, faced Tony
and kept quiet for some seconds. “i’m sorry for everything i did to you,
please forgive me. Erase the bad
feelings you have for me from your
heart. I beg of you” she pleaded
meekly. Tony cleared his throat. “Jenifer all that happened between us is
now a thing of the past. You can’t
imagine how happy i’m being alive. You
can’t imagine how lucky i’m right now.
That guy would have slit my throat over
what happened in Europe he never got to understand. Of course i forgive, i
also forgive my pig head brother
Emeka. I have nothing against anybody.
I’m so glad to be alive” he answered
seriously, leaving me with guilt which
forced me to say something. “I don’t know what to say Tony, believe
me it wasn’t easy being without a friend
and brother like you. I won’t apologise
right here but will do it in a big way when
we get out of this jungle” i said to him
with respect. Joe and the chief simply listened, saying nothing to us… By 6am, we all ran to the parish house
where a very shocked priest received
and entertained us before driving us
back to Benin city with the parish bus. Oh we were lucky to be alive, lucky to
escape from the pit of hell. It was a
terrible experience. But we weren’t still
safe because our captor knew a lot
about us and was still free out there
probably looking for a means to get us back….

On getting to Benin, we headed straight
to the police station where we narrated
our ordeal to DSP Maku. He quickly
swung into action by contacting his
colleagues in Delta State.
Chief Manuel and Jenifer went to hospital afterwards, while the police,
Tony, Joe and i headed back to the
village where we were held captive after
getting enough details from the priest
who declined going with us for his own
safety. Unfortunately we never found my car
nor got any of the thugs when we
arrived the village. We searched
everywhere but got nothing.
That was how I lost my Tanker and car
in just few weeks, but thank God i still had my life to live. I was given a second
opportunity to live a very clean Christian
life. Joe became much more than a
bodyguard to me from that day. We
became so close like family. He became
the brother i never had. My close ally
and everything.
As for Chuck Noris, he was never caught. A situation which made all of us
very scared, because he had the means
and power to strike back at any time. His
sojourn in Europe really made him a
master of crime. I hosted a big get together at my house,
three days after our miraculous escape
from captivity. I organised a big party for
my townsmen, using the opportunity to
apologize to everyone especially Tony
who hugged me at the end of the day. It was just so wonderful. Finally, Jenifer and I got married two
months later in a quiet ceremony. We
rushed everything because she found
out she was pregnant four weeks after
the terrible adventure, but unfortunately
she lost the baby four days after our wedding. A situation that broke our
hearts and prompted a very hasty
decision from me.
I decided to move out of Benin city with
her. I quickly made plans and
arrangements. A month later, we arrived South Africa to
start a new life, leaving behind my two
gas stations and house under Joe’s
Jenifer had difficulty getting pregnant
again, but we were finally blessed with a cute baby boy through surgery a year
later. However it came with a big price.
She will never conceive again, but I still
do love her. I do love my family. They
are all i got. Love is a beautiful thing but sometimes it
comes with great price and
complications. We are in Africa, please
love reasonably……….

Crime / Mob Kills Soldier In Nasarawa State by johneewalker: Last week on Tue at 09:50am

Nasarawa state Police command has arrested two persons in connections with a mob action that led to the death of a soldier, Lance Cpl. Ayuba Ali, on Monday in Akwanga, Nasarawa state.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Kennedy Idirisu, confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lafia.

Idirisu said that available information revealed the the victim, who was on pass from Maiduguri, allegedly hit a street hawker at Agwan Affi area of the town while riding on a motorbike.

According to him, the victim, who was in mufti, tried to pacify the hawker and an altercation ensued resulting in irate youth beating him to coma.

Idirisu said the soldier later died at the hospital, while investigation has begun.

He said efforts have been intesified to arrest all the perpetrators of the dastardly act.

Meanwhile, Mr. John Abimiku, an eye witness told NAN that the area has been deserted for fear of the unknown.

“As I speak with you now, about four military trucks are stationed in the area and soldiers are picking up any youth on sight,” Abimiku added.

He claimed that the two persons arrested by the police were amongst those who took the soldier to the hospital after the mob action.

Foreign Affairs / Mudslide Buries Over 300 In Sierra Leone by johneewalker: Last week on Tue at 09:45am

More than 300 people were killed when a mudslide struck the outskirts of Sierra Leone’s capital Freetown on Monday, sweeping away homes.

The Red Cross said at least 205 bodies had been taken to the central morgue in Freetown. Police and military personnel were at the scene in the mountain town of Regent searching for people trapped in the debris.

The death toll is expected to rise as more bodies are recovered, Red Cross spokesman Abu Bakarr Tarawallie said.

Vice President Victor Foh told Reuters at the scene: “It is likely that hundreds are lying dead underneath the rubble.” He said a number of illegal buildings had been erected in the area.

“The disaster is so serious that I myself feel broken,” he said. “We’re trying to cordon the area. Evacuate the people.”

Standing in the rain, people cried and gestured toward a muddy hillside where dozens of houses once stood, a Reuters witness said.

“We were asleep when we heard the noise of one of the walls falling down. By the time we got up water was flowing in and the whole house was flooded,” said 36-year-old Salimatu Bangura.

She escaped, but her brother died, she said.

Mudslides and floods are fairly common during the rainy season in West Africa, where deforestation and poor town planning has put residents at risk.

Politics / I Never Stole Nigeria’s Money –diezani by johneewalker: Last week on Tue at 09:38am

Former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Allison Madueke, has broken her long silence on several allegations of financial impropriety levelled against her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and said she never stole Nigeria’s money.

Mrs. Madueke, in a statement issued yesterday, a copy of which was made available to Daily Sun, said she decided to respond to the allegations because the EFCC was taking advantage of her silence to try and convict her in the media.

The EFCC had alleged that the former minister, by an order of a Federal High Court has forfeited $153.3 million to the Federal Government.

In her reaction, Mrs. Madueke denied ever owning such money and said she was never notified of formal charges, if truly there was a prima facie evidence or indictment against her regarding the said issue.

“I wish to state I cannot forfeit what was never mine. I do not know the basis on which the EFCC has chosen to say that I am the owner of these funds as no evidence was provided to me before the order was obtained, and they have not, in fact, served me with the order or any evidence since they obtained it.

“Let me re-state categorically as I have always maintained, for the record, I have not and will never steal money from or defraud the Federal Government of Nigeria. I am willing to respond to charges brought against me that follow duly laid down procedures,” she said.

She challenged the anti-graft agency to also publish details of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation’s (NNPC’s) accounts from where the said $153.3 million was taken, with proof that she authorised such a transaction/transactions, acting either in her private capacity or as a minister, since the EFCC alleged that the said $153.3 million was ‘wired’ from NNPC.

She also debunked the report that Italian prosecutors indicted her for sharing in the loot of the $1.3 billion OPL 245 oil block deal, which involved Malabu and the Joint Venture Multinational partners, ENI (AGIP) and Royal Dutch.

“Let me once again state for the record that this is another figment of the author’s imagination, which, given the persistent bid to ensure my destruction and stick all of the sins of the corruption that plagued oil and gas sector in the last 30 years upon my head, probably emanated from the EFCC itself.”

“Let me clear the history of OPL 245, otherwise known as Malabu. You will find a full chronology in the attached report that I made to the House of Representatives in late 2011 (Annex 2A/Annex-2B). In 2010, shortly after I was appointed as Minister of Petroleum Resources, the issue of OPL 245 was brought to my attention. I looked into the case and immediately became aware of the inherent and long standing sensitivities around this issue. It became clear from the onset that this case was not within the direct purview of the Minister of Petroleum Resources, but, in the main, was centered around issues of law. By this time, there was already an International Centre for Settlement of Investment Dispute (ICSID) investigation and claims against the FGN running into billions of dollars. Therefore, we took directives from the Chief Legal Officer of the nation; the Attorney General and Minister of Justice. In all of these matters due process was followed to the letter at all times. I wish to categorically state that I have never held any discussions on this matter, with any individuals or entities outside of official channels. As Minister of Petroleum Resources, I did not participate in any activity relating to financial payments on the Malabu matter, other than those statutorily mandated to the Minister of Petroleum Resources by the Petroleum Act. My role in this matter was purely a statutory, one as required by law in the Petroleum Act 3,” she explained.

Education / Asuu Strike: Nans Gives Govt. 21 Days Ultimatum by johneewalker: Last week on Tue at 09:33am

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the Federal Government (FG) to look into the plight of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) or face the wrath of students.

Mr Chinonso Obasi, National President, NANS who gave the threat in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Monday said the FG has just 21 days to resolve its outstanding issues with ASUU in the interest of longsuffering Nigerian students.

According to him, Nigerian students will be forced to ground activities in the country if by the expiration of their 21days ultimatum, the issue was not resolved.

“NANS finds it hard to believe that past governments will fail to honour agreements with members of ASUU for more than seven years,”he said.

Obasi added that NANS would be meeting in the coming week with leaders of ASUU to find out their irreducible minimum in their demands.

He explained that the students would be forced to bear the brunt of the collapse in the negotiation between the union and the government.

“It is with deep pain and regret that NANS received the news of another indefinite strike by ASUU over the Federal Government’s indifference to their plight.

“Nigerian students sees the breakdown in negotiations as a further proof that political leaders don’t care about their future.

”Consequently, we wish to call on the Federal Government to do all it can to get ASUU back to the classrooms.

“The demands of ASUU are reasonable and touch on the integrity of government, especially in the light of the fight against corruption,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ASUU on Monday officially announced the commencement of its nationwide industrial actions at a news conference held in Abuja.

Education / Asuu Embarks On Nationwide Indefinite Strike by johneewalker: Last week on Mon at 10:20am

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has embarked on an indefinite strike.

In a memo to lecturers dated August 12, Biodun Ogunyemi, president of the ASUU national strike coordinating committee, said they resolved to go on the strike because the federal government failed to implement its 2009 agreement and 2013 memorandum of understanding (MoU).

Ogunyemi highlighted some of the issues as non-payment of salaries, non-payment of earned academic allowance (EAA), removal of universities staff schools from funding by government and non-implementation of provisions of the 2014 pension reform act with respect to retired professors and their salaries, amongst others.

“The national executive council (NEC) of ASUU met at the university of Abuja main campus, Giri, on the 12th of August 2017 to consider the results of a referendum from all branches in a bid to ascertain ways of convincing government to implement outstanding aspects of the 2009 agreement and MoU of 2013,” it read.

“The result of the referendum showed that an overwhelming majority of the branches of our union voted for the strike.

“In the light of the foregoing, and having exhausted all avenues to get government to fully implement the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement and the 2013 MoU as well as related demands, resolved to embark on a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action commencing Sunday, 13th August 2017.”

The lecturers were asked not to “teach any course whatsoever” and “not conduct or supervise any examination at any level”.

Foreign Affairs / Terrorists Kill 18 In Popular Burkina Faso Restaurant by johneewalker: Last week on Mon at 09:58am

Suspected Islamic extremists opened fire at a Turkish restaurant in the capital of Burkina Faso late Sunday, killing at least 18 people in the second such attack on a restaurant popular with foreigners in the last two years.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the violence, which continued into the early hours Monday. Gunfire could be heard almost seven hours after the attack began.

Communication Minister Remi Dandjinou told journalists that at least 18 people were dead and eight others wounded, according to a provisional toll. He said two of the attackers were also killed.

The victims came from several different nationalities, he said. At least one of the dead was French.

Security forces arrived at the scene with armored vehicles after reports of shots fired near Aziz Istanbul, an upscale restaurant in Ouagadougou. The attack brought back painful memories of the January 2016 attack at another cafe that left 30 people dead.

Police Capt. Guy Ye said three or four assailants had arrived at the Aziz Istanbul restaurant on motorcycles, and then began shooting randomly at the crowds dining Sunday evening.

Burkina Faso, a landlocked nation in West Africa, is one of the poorest countries in the world. It shares a northern border with Mali, which has long battled Islamic extremists.

The three attackers in the 2016 massacre were of foreign origin, according to al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, which claimed responsibility in the aftermath along with the jihadist group known as Al Mourabitoun.

But the terror threat in Burkina Faso is increasingly homegrown, experts say.

The northern border region is now the home of a local preacher, Ibrahim Malam Dicko, who radicalized and has claimed recent deadly attacks against troops and civilians.

His association, Ansarul Islam, is now considered a terrorist group by Burkina Faso’s government.
